Veterinary Theatre Nurse

 

A Veterinary Theatre Nurse is wanted to join our supportive team

 at Shepherds the Vets, Bridgend, South Wales.

We are a busy and progressive Small Animal practice

with a purpose-built hospital (RCVS Accredited) and 3 branches.

We are proud to have digital x-ray, dental x-ray, ultrasound, endoscope and K-Laser.

As a practice we aim to provide high standards for our patients, with very few cases

being referred out of the practice.

 

 

The Role

This role to manage the smooth operation of the clinical activities within the theatre in our busy hospital and to drive/support improvements in practice performance in both customer service and clinical care.

Your main responsibilities are

To manage theatre resource levels, including break and lunch Rota, liaising with head nurse to resolve any issues.

To manage clinical operation list for the day, liaising with head nurse to resolve any issues.

To provide specialist nursing support to the surgical team as both a circulating and scrubbed nurse.

Administering drugs, fluids and injections as per protocols under veterinary supervision.

To prepare theatres and surgical trolleys for use during surgery – to include selecting appropriate surgical instruments and consumables, liaison with clinician in charge regarding requirements, ensuring surgical equipment within theatre (diathermy/suction) functioning and set up, ensuring pre-operative x-rays are available as required.

To prepare for and assist with the delivery of anaesthesia – to include anaesthetic machine checks, selecting and safety checking breathing systems and endotracheal tubes, assisting with patient restraint and placement of intravenous catheters.

Sterilising and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment. To include cleaning, lubricating and checking function of instruments and equipment, wrapping of single instruments/kits and consumables to ensure effective sterilisation.

Undertake RPS duties, including taking x-rays and managing the X ray process to ensure all X ray exposure is recorded daily.

To provide gold standard nursing care to patients in the post-operative recovery period at individual and team level.

Advising all new team members (Vets/ Nurses) on theatre techniques and protocols used, including taking an active role in training, directing and supervising pre-training and training nurses.

Ensuring the theatre protocols are fully compliance with the RCVS code of professional conduct and all staff that work within the theatre adhere to these protocols, immediately giving feedback, taking action or escalating any breaches as appropriate.To assist with surgical procedures and to ensure gold standard nursing care is delivered to all animals.

 

 

Candidate Requirements

 

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate will hold the required skills and experience to thrive within this role,

including;

Fully qualified and registered Veterinary Nurse with an Honours / Foundation Degree or Level 3 Diploma qualification

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Self-motivated, driven and efficient individual with good interpersonal skills

Confident decision maker with the ability to lead and inspire colleagues

 

 

Benefits

 

Permanent position

Full time at 40 hours per week.

Working hours are Mon to Fri 8am until 5pm

Annual salary is £27,040.

20 days’ holiday plus bank holidays.

Progression opportunities.

Annual CPD allowance of £500 and 3 days.

RCVS fees paid.

Veterinary Surgeons

Exciting opportunities to join our dynamic team at Shepherds the Vets, South Wales.

We are an independent and growing, small animal practice, with an accredited RCVS hospital and 3 branches.

We are proud to have a purpose-built hospital with all the facilities and equipment to enable us to deliver a gold standard level of animal care.

Due to continuing organic growth, we are currently looking to recruit two veterinary surgeons.

The current practice team is made up of 12 vets and we are looking to increase this to 14. We have a supportive team with that works hard and socialises together, there is a healthy mix of newly qualified vets and highly experienced vets.

This means if you are newly qualified we have experience with training new grads and can support this exciting start to your career. We are a busy practice with a varied caseload, this has enabled some of our graduate vets to complete their PDP within a year.

For an experienced veterinary surgeon, we offer the opportunity to expand surgical experience through a busy and varied surgical list, gain sole charge experience at branch level, further enhance medical knowledge via our busy Tier 3 hospital ward. We are fully supportive further training ambitions and certificates are encouraged.

 We work alongside certificate holders in cardiology and ophthalmology and have other vets working towards certificates, as a result we are very fortunate not to refer many cases.

We have a great team of nurses who will support you. This includes a head nurse, a specialist theatre nurse, 7 RVN’s and 8 SVN’s. Our fantastic nurses are here 24-7 and answer our out of hour’s calls – this means that you’re on-call duty only involves the actual emergency work.

We pride ourselves on providing a full out of hours’ emergency service and this is shared on a rota basis.

Weekend coverage is 1 in 4. However, the practice believes in true work live balance and to ensure our Vets get this balance right there are rota’ d days off after OOH work and a maximum working week of 45 hours. While on call you have the support of a senior vet as “back up” to discuss cases, assist you and attend if required.

We are based in Bridgend, South Wales. With quick access to the beautiful welsh coast line for great surfing, coastal walks and many other water sports. An hour away from the beautiful Brecon Beacons mountain range with its hiking trails and annual Jazz festival. We are close to Cardiff – which is has been voted 3rd most liveable city in the UK!       London is accessible through a 2-hour train trip.

Registered Veterinary Nurse

 

A Registered Veterinary Nurse is wanted to join our supportive team

 at Shepherds the Vets, Bridgend, South Wales.

We are a busy and progressive Small Animal practice

with a purpose-built hospital (RCVS Accredited) and 3 branches.

We are proud to have all the “toys” (digital x-ray, ultrasound, endoscope, K laser etc.)

As a practice we aim to provide high standards for our patients, with very few cases

being referred out of the practice.

 

Nursing Team

Our nursing team is essential to assist the practice in delivering a gold standard of care to our clients and patients. We have a strong, diverse and vibrant nursing team consisting of 8 qualified nurses and 8 student nurses.

As a training practice, we promote further development of their clinical skills and currently have two nurses commencing their nursing certificate courses, both of which are being supported

and funded by the practice.

We believe that continuity of care is essential for any veterinary hospital and therefore provide our own out of hours’ coverage to enable us to deliver 24/7 care. This essential around the clock care is delivered by our nursing team on a rota basis covering weekend and nights shifts.
