Newly Graduated Veterinary Surgeons

An opportunity to join our supportive team at Shepherds the Vets, Bridgend, South Wales. Are we the team for you?

We are an independent small animal and exotics practice, with an RCVS accredited hospital and 3 branches. The practice is owned and run by two of our own vets who work alongside the team.

Our hospital facilities include endless parking, 6 consult rooms including a bereavement room, separate canine/feline/exotic/isolation wards, multiple operating theatres, a dental suite and staff on call flat. We benefit from having direct digital x-ray, dental x-ray, doppler ultrasound with multiple probes, multiple endoscopes and extensive lab equipment including Sedivue.

Our 15 vet team have a variety of interests and advanced qualifications including Surgery, Exotics and Feline Medicine. Our Advanced Practitioner in surgery performs referral level orthopaedics and soft tissue procedures in house. 

We have vast experience with new graduates and have successfully passed vets through the new  VetGDP system.

We prioritise supportive development and have a 12 week structured induction as well as regular and structured mentoring, training and feedback.

We have an excellent team of nurses providing clinical support. This includes a head nurse, a specialist theatre nurse, 10 RVN’s and 12 SVN’s. Our fantastic nurse team are here 24-7, monitoring inpatients and answering our out of hour’s calls. This means that your on-call duty only involves the actual emergency work.  

We pride ourselves on providing a full out of hours’ emergency and inpatient service to our own clients of which our vets contribute to on a fair rota basis. This requires you to be within 15 minutes of the practice or utilise our flat facilities when on-call. Weekend coverage is 1 in 4. We believe in balance so recovery time is built in after OOH shifts, as well as time on-call accounted for in your hours (even if you're at home sleeping). While on-call, you have the support of a senior vet as “back up” to discuss cases, assist you and attend if required.

We are based in Bridgend, South Wales, 5 minutes from the M4. With access to the beautiful Welsh coast line for great surfing, coastal walks and many other water sports. An hour away from the beautiful Brecon Beacons mountain range with its hiking trails but only 30 minutes to Cardiff for the nightlife. London is accessible through a 2-hour direct train trip. .

Starting salary £34K, CPD allowance, RCVS, VDS and 1 other membership paid, 5 weeks holiday (33 days).

Veterinary Surgeons

Exciting opportunities to join our dynamic team at Shepherds the Vets, South Wales.

We are an independent and growing, small animal and exotics practice, with an accredited RCVS hospital and 3 branches.

We are proud to have a purpose-built hospital with all the facilities and equipment to enable us to deliver a gold standard level of animal care.

Due to continuing organic growth, we are currently looking to recruit a permanent veterinary surgeon.

The current practice team is made up of 14 vets. We have a supportive team with that works hard and socialises together, there is a healthy mix of newly qualified vets and highly experienced vets. 

For an experienced veterinary surgeon (Minimum 2 years UK experience post qualification), we offer the opportunity to expand surgical experience through a busy and varied surgical list, gain sole charge experience at branch level, further enhance medical knowledge via our busy hospital ward and in-house emergency service. We are fully supportive further training ambitions and certificates are encouraged.

 Our team contains multiple certificate holders, both vets and nurses. In addition, we collaborate with visiting specialists in cardiology and ophthalmology. As a result, we are very fortunate not to refer many cases and to provide a full and varied in-house service.

We have a great team of nurses who will support you. This includes a head nurse, a specialist theatre nurse, 8 RVN’s and 8 SVN’s. Our fantastic nurses are here 24-7 and answer our out of hour’s calls.

Weekend coverage is 1 in 4. However, the practice believes in true work live balance and to ensure our Vets get this balance right there are rota’ d days off after OOH work. While on call you have the support of a senior vet as “back up” to discuss cases, assist you and attend if required.

Competitive salary package dependant on experience, CPD allowance, RCVS Fees paid, 5 weeks holiday.

Registered Veterinary Nurse

Qualified nurse (RVN) - £31,200 for 40h FT

Part time applications are actively encouraged.

Happy to support newly qualified RVNs in the transition to their new role.

We are looking for an RVN to join our independent RCVS accredited small animal hospital Shepherds The Vets in Bridgend, South Wales.

You will be joining a team of over 20 qualified and training nurses including those with further qualifications and interests in anaesthesia, exotics , feline medicine and behaviour. We fund and fully support further development in areas of your interest.

Our hospital provides a comprehensive clinical service including offering referral level orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery, services in exotics and our own inpatient/emergency service.

This is a varied role; managing inpatients, monitoring anaesthesia, assisting in surgical and diagnostic procedures, consulting in nurse clinics, dispensing medications, triaging patients and advising clients.

We believe providing OOH to our own clients allows the best clinical care and job satisfaction. The role includes a share in the OOH rota (weekends, bank holidays and nights). These are working shifts and recovery time is provided. You are welcome to view an example rota.

Our nurses are an integral part of our team and facilitated to utilise their skills to the maximum. We support schedule 3 procedures and a holistic approach to patient care that involves nursing expertise. Our nurses are actively involved in clinical governance and the direction of the practice.
